Verben mit Präposition & Pronominaladverbien 🔌

Many German verbs come with a fixed preposition that you just have to memorize — sich freuen auf, warten auf, denken an, sich interessieren für. The preposition also decides the case of what follows.

💡 Once you know the verb + preposition, the tricky part is how to refer back to it: use a pronoun for people, but a pronominal adverb (da-/wo- word) for things and ideas.

👉 The preposition here is fixed and idiomatic — warten auf doesn't mean "wait on top of." Learn the verb * together with* its preposition, like one unit.

👤 vs 📦 The core rule: person or thing?

❓ wo- / wor- (asking about a thing)

To ask a question about a thing, swap da(r) for wo(r). Same vowel rule: vowel-initial preposition → wor-.

🔗 da(r) + Präposition + dass-/Infinitiv-Satz

When a verb-with-preposition is followed by a whole clause, German first puts the da(r)-word in the main clause to "announce" it, then adds the clause.

Ich freue mich darauf, dass du kommst.
   → I'm looking forward to you coming.

Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen.
   → I'm looking forward to seeing you.

Wir warten darauf, dass der Bus kommt.
   → We're waiting for the bus to come.

Er denkt daran, ein Auto zu kaufen.
   → He's thinking about buying a car.

👉 Same subject in both halves → use zu + Infinitiv. Different subjects → use dass + Nebensatz.
