InfinitivsƤtze (zu + Infinitiv) šŸ“˜

Konjunktionen (Conjunctions) 🧲

Conjunctions join two ideas, clauses, or sentences — just like ā€œand,ā€ ā€œbut,ā€ or ā€œbecauseā€ in English.

Example:

Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeite.
I’m learning German because I work in Germany.

šŸŽÆ Focus per level:

  • A1: und, aber, oder
  • A2-B1: weil, dass, wenn
  • B2: obwohl, wƤhrend, damit, sobald, bevor

Conjunctions have 2 types:

1ļøāƒ£ Coordinating (Nebenordnend)

Connects equal clauses

  • Word order stays normal (Verb = position 2)

  • Also called null (0) positioĖ™ Conjunction, because its position is not counted in the sentence.

# Emoji Conjunction Meaning Level Example
6 ⚔ doch however / but B2 Ich wollte kommen, doch ich hatte keine Zeit.
7 🧾 jedoch however (formal) B2 Ich wollte kommen, jedoch hatte ich keine Zeit.
8 šŸ“š allein but (literary) B2 Er ist reich, allein er ist nicht glücklich.

🧠 Coordinating Conjunctions — Mind Map (B1 + B2)

mindmap
  root((Nebenordnende Konjunktionen))

    B1 (Core)
      und
      oder
      aber
      sondern
      denn

    B2 (Extended)
      doch
      jedoch
      allein

🧠 Rule:

Verb order stays normal, Verb stays in position 2 for both sentences(normal sentence order).

First sentence(SVO) —,— Conjunction Second sentence(SVO)

Examples

Ich gehe nicht auf den Markt, sondern ich gehe in das Kino
--> I do not go to the Market- I go to Cinema
Both are main sentence (S V O)

Das Buch ist nicht interessant., sondern langweilig.
--> The book is not interesting. The book is boring

"sondern" rule

šŸ‘‰ Used after negation

  • āŒ Ich gehe nicht ins Kino, aber ich bleibe zu Hause
  • āœ”ļø Ich gehe nicht ins Kino, sondern ich bleibe zu Hause

"doch" rule

šŸ‘‰ Used to express contrast, but can also be used to express a surprising result or a correction

1. doch = ā€œbut / howeverā€ (Coordinating Conjunction)

Same as aber, but often sounds a bit stronger or more contrasting.

Examples:

  • Ich wollte kommen, doch ich hatte keine Zeit.
  • Er ist müde, doch er arbeitet weiter.

2. doch = contradiction (Reply word)

Used to contradict a negative statement

šŸ‘‰ English has no exact equivalent → closest is ā€œYes, I do!ā€

Examples:

  • A: Du kommst nicht mit.

  • B: Doch! (Yes, I am!)

  • A: Du hast keine Zeit.

  • B: Doch!

3. doch = modal particle (very common in spoken German)

Adds emotion, emphasis, or persuasion

Examples:

  • Komm doch mit! → Come on, join!
  • Das ist doch klar. → That’s obvious.
  • Du bist doch mein Freund. → You are my friend (you know that)

2ļøāƒ£ SubOrdinating Unterordnende

Connects main + dependent clause Verb Order changes - Verb goes to the end of the sentence

# Emoji Conjunction Meaning Type Level Example
1 ā€…ā€ŠāŸ¹ā€…ā€Š\implies⟹ weil because → Reason Reason B1 Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich müde bin.
2 šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ dass that → Statement Statement B1 Ich glaube, dass er krank ist.
3 šŸ¤” wenn if / when → Time/Condition Time/Cond B1 Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause.
4 šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø ob whether / if → Indirect question Question B1 Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.
5 šŸ‘“šŸ» als when (past, one-time) → Time Time B1 Als ich jung war, spielte ich Fußball.
6 ā®ļø bevor before → Time Time B1 Ich gehe schlafen, bevor ich lese.
7 āļø nachdem after → Time Time B1 Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich spazieren.
13 ⚔ sobald as soon as → Time Time B2 Sobald ich ankomme, rufe ich dich an.
14 ā³ solange as long as → Time Time B2 Ich warte, solange du arbeitest.
21 šŸ“… seit(dem) since → Time (starting point) Time B1 Seit ich hier wohne, fühle ich mich wohl.
22 ā±ļø bis until → Time (endpoint) Time B1 Ich warte hier, bis der Bus kommt.

🧠 wƤhrend, seit(dem), bis also work as prepositions (see 3-0-Preposition.md) — the difference is what follows: a preposition takes a noun phrase (seit der Schule), a conjunction introduces a full clause with the verb pushed to the end (seit ich hier wohne).

🧠 nachdem — Tense Sequencing (Vorzeitigkeit)

nachdem describes an action that happened before the action in the main clause — so the two clauses can't be in the same tense. The nachdem-clause always takes the one-step-earlier tense.

Main clause tense nachdem-clause tense Example
PrƤsens / Futur Perfekt Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich spazieren.
PrƤteritum / Perfekt Plusquamperfekt Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.
  • Nachdem ich die Prüfung bestanden hatte, habe ich gefeiert. → After I had passed the exam, I celebrated.
  • Nachdem wir angekommen waren, haben wir das Hotel gesucht. → After we had arrived, we looked for the hotel.

🧠 Mind Map

mindmap
  root((Unterordnende Konjunktionen))
    Grund(Reason)
      weil
    Ergebnis(Result)
      sodass
    Zweck(Purpose)
      damit

      nachdem
    Gegensatz(Contrast)
      obwohl
    Unsicherheit(Indirect Question)
      ob
    Aussage(Statement)
      dass

🧠 Rules

  • Conjugation always pushes VERB to the end of the sentence

    • weil ich müde bin
    • obwohl es regnet geht
  • Comma is mandatory

    • Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
  • It can be applied either in Ist or in Ind half/sentence.

🧠 1. If the conjunction comes in the second sentence (--, -->)

Main clause, conjunction + subordinate clause (verb at end)

  1. Haupt Satz : NO word order change.
  2. Neben Satz: Verb (Main/ Model / Helping verb) goes to the end in conjugated form (S O V)

(S V O) , Conjunction (S O V):

Example:

Ich gehe nach Hause, weil es regnet.
→ I am going home because it is raining.

Ich kann heute nicht kommen. Ich rƤume mein Zimmer auf.
--> Ich kann heute nicht kommen, weil ich mein Zimmer aufrƤume.

🧠 1.2 With model Verbs, model verb push to end (--, mv-->)

In subordinate clauses, modal verb goes to the end

(S V O) , Conjunction (S O V):

Er kommt heute nicht. Er ist krank
--> Er kommt heute nicht, weil er krank ist.

Sie will Deutsch lernen, Sie will in Berlin studieren.
--> Sie will Deutsch lernen, weil sie in Berlin Studieren will.

Ich habe das Buch nicht gekauft. Ich habe es schon gelesen.
--> Ich habe das Buch nicht gekauft, weil ich es schon gelesen habe.

Ich kann heute nicht kommen. Ich muss mein Zimmer aufrƤumen.
--> Ich kann heute nicht kommen, weil ich mein Zimmer aufrƤumen muss!

🧠 2. If the conjunction comes in Ist sentence (, --> <--)

If conjugation comes to the first position, it pushes VERBs of both sentences toward center.

  1. Neben Satz: Verb goes to the end in conjugated form (S O V)
  2. Haupt Satz(2nd position) : Verb comes at first position in conjugated form (V S O)

Conjunction + (S O V) , (V S O)

Example:

Weil Ich nach D.L. gehen will, lerne Ich Deutsche

Obwohl das Wetter schlecht ist, gehen die Kinder in die Schule

Wenn ich Zeit habe , gehe ich ins Kino

3ļøāƒ£ Zweiteilige Konnektoren (Two-Part Connectors)

Pairs of words that work together to connect two ideas. Most behave like coordinating conjunctions — normal word order (verb stays in position 2) in both halves.

# Connector Meaning Example
1 entweder ... oder either ... or Entweder gehe ich ins Kino, oder ich bleibe zu Hause.
2 weder ... noch neither ... nor Er hat weder Zeit noch Geld.
3 sowohl ... als auch both ... and Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
4 nicht nur ... sondern auch not only ... but also Er ist nicht nur intelligent, sondern auch freundlich.
5 je ... desto/umso the more ... the more Je mehr ich lerne, desto besser werde ich.

āš ļø Word order quirks:

  • entweder / weder at the very start of a sentence occupy position 1, so the verb still follows normally in position 2: Entweder kommt er heute, oder er kommt morgen.
  • If nicht nur leads a full clause, the verb often moves right after it (like other front-position adverbs): Nicht nur ist er klug, sondern auch fleißig.
  • je ... desto/umso is different: the je-clause is a subordinate clause (verb pushed to the end), and the desto/umso-clause has the verb immediately after desto/umso — both halves always use a comparative adjective/adverb.

je ... desto/umso in detail

Je + comparative + ... + verb (end), desto/umso + comparative + verb + ...

  • Je mehr ich übe, desto besser werde ich. → The more I practice, the better I get.
  • Je Ƥlter man wird, desto weiser wird man. → The older one gets, the wiser one becomes.
  • Je früher wir losfahren, umso schneller sind wir da. → The earlier we leave, the sooner we'll be there.

🧠 desto and umso are interchangeable — umso is slightly more common in spoken German.

šŸ”— Konjunktionaladverbien (Conjunctive Adverbs)
