Genitive Prepositions 🧩

Genitive = Possession, reason, cause, or relation.

These prepositions always take the Genitive case.

Common Genitive Prepositions (B1–B2)

🧠 Sentence Structure

Preposition Take place of Subject P1 and push it behind Verb.

• Position 1 = Präposition + Genitiv
• Position 2 = Verb
• Position 3 = Subjekt

Usage

Reason

• ⚠️ wegen → because of X did Y

Replacement

• 🔄 statt / anstatt → X instead of Y

  Both statt and anstatt mean “instead of” and are usually interchangeable.

Contrast

• 🌧️ trotz → despite of X we did Y

Place/Time

• 🌐 außerhalb → outside of X
• 🏠 innerhalb → within X
• ⏳ während → during X did Y

außerhalb	Außerhalb der Stadt ist es ruhiger.	It is quieter outside the city.
innerhalb	Innerhalb eines Monats muss ich antworten.	I have to reply within a month.
trotz	Trotz des Regens gehen wir spazieren.	Despite the rain, we are going for a walk.
statt	Statt des Autos nehme ich den Bus.	Instead of the car, I take the bus.
während	Während des Urlaubs habe ich viel gelesen.	During the vacation, I read a lot.
