Ordinary Conjunctions vs Conjunctive adverb

Unlike subordinating conjunctions such as weil or obwohl, they do not send the verb to the end.

These words connect two independent main clauses (Hauptsätze).

They behave like adverbs, so the finite verb remains in Position 2.

1. Coordinating conjunction

Position unchanged

→ Verb stays in Position 2 in both main clauses.

SVO,conjunctionSVOS V O, conjunction S V OSVO,conjunctionSVO

\boxed { \text { Main-Clause(S + V + ... ) , (🔗 co-Conjugation) + Sub-Clause( Subject + Verb_c + ...)}}

Example:

  • Ich bin müde, aber ich arbeite.
  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.

2. Subordinating conjunction

Verb position changes

  • Verb moves to the END in subordinate clause irrespective of position

Conjunction−S−O−VcConjunction -S-O-V_cConjunction−S−O−Vc

When main clause come first

\boxed { \text { Main-Clause(S + V + ... ) + 🔗 sub-Conjugation + Sub-Clause( Subject + ... + Verb_c)}}

When Subordinate Clause comes first

\boxed { \text { 🔗 Sub-Conjugation + Sub-Clause( Subject + ... + Verb_c) , Main-Clause(V + S... ) + + }}

Example:

  • weil ich krank bin
  • obwohl es regnet
  • dass er kommt

3. Conjunctive Adverb

Verb comes immediately after the adverb

🧠 Connection Rule

  • Conjugation-Adverb = P1
  • Verb = P2 in NebenSatz

\boxed { \text { Main-Clause(S + V + .. ) + 🔗 Adverb-Conjugation + Sub-Clause( Verb_c + Subject + ... )}}

Example:

  • Deshalb komme ich.
  • Trotzdem gehe ich.
  • Außerdem lerne ich.

1. Result / Consequence 🎯

Logical reason: Cause → Result

 X happens. Therefore Y happens. \text { X happens. Therefore Y happens. } X happens. Therefore Y happens.

  • Expresses the same RESULT as "sodass", but uses two main clauses instead of a subordinate clause.
  • We can use both , and . for sentences with deshalb

1.1 deshalb :: that’s why/ therefore 👉

✅ The important rule:

trotzdem → conjugated verb remains in Position 2.

 Hauptsatz, P1(deshalb/deswegen/darum/daher) + P2(Verb) + P3(Subjekt) + ... \boxed { \text { Hauptsatz, P1(deshalb/deswegen/darum/daher) + P2(Verb) + P3(Subjekt) + ... }} Hauptsatz, P1(deshalb/deswegen/darum/daher) + P2(Verb) + P3(Subjekt) + ...

🇩🇪 Word🇬🇧 Meaning🎯 Function💬 Example
deshalbtherefore / that's whyResultIch bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
deswegenbecause of that / that's whyResultEs regnet. Deswegen nehme ich einen Regenschirm.
darumtherefore / that's whyResultIch bin müde. Darum gehe ich früh ins Bett.
dahertherefore / henceResultIch habe viel gearbeitet. Daher bin ich müde.

You can often replace deshalb/deswegen/darum/daher with one another:

  • Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
  • Ich bin krank. Deswegen bleibe ich zu Hause.
  • Ich bin krank. Darum bleibe ich zu Hause.
  • Ich bin krank. Daher bleibe ich zu Hause.

deshalb vs weil

weil → verb at the end

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. 🔴

deshalb → verb in position 2

Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause. 🟢

1.2. nämlich :: namely / because / actually

It usually gives an explanation or reason for something that was just said.

nämlich cannot normally start the sentence in the same way as deshalb.

  • used only in Hauptsatz
  • Always goes to P3

Usually comes immediately after the finite verb in a main clause.

Sentence 1 + comma + subject + nämlich + verb

Examples : nämlich

🇩🇪 Example🇬🇧 Meaning
Ich kann heute nicht kommen. Ich muss nämlich arbeiten.I can't come today. I have to work, you see / because I have to work.
Ich gehe heute nicht joggen. Ich bin nämlich sehr müde.I'm not going jogging today. I'm very tired, actually.
Wir fahren mit dem Zug. Wir haben nämlich kein Auto.We're taking the train. We don't have a car, you see.
Ich lerne Deutsch. Ich möchte nämlich in Deutschland bleiben.I'm learning German. I want to stay in Germany, you see.
Ich kann nicht lange bleiben. Ich muss nämlich morgen arbeiten.I can't stay long. I have to work tomorrow, you see.

2. Konzessivsätze --> Contrast/Abnormal 🌗

Express contradiction: although / even though / despite the fact that

Contrast --> despite/ inspite of/ nevertheless

 A → but / despite that → B \text { A → but / despite that → B } A → but / despite that → B

  • Both sentences are Hauptsatz
  • Verb stay at second position always

Contrast Adverb Conjugation

🇩🇪 Word🇬🇧 Meaning🎯 Function💬 Example
trotzdemnevertheless / stillContrastEs regnet. Trotzdem gehe ich spazieren.
jedochhoweverContrastDas Auto ist teuer. Jedoch ist es sehr zuverlässig.
allerdingshowever / admittedlyContrastDas Hotel ist schön. Allerdings ist es sehr teuer.
dennochneverthelessContrastEs ist kalt. Dennoch gehe ich joggen.

For B1 → trotzdem → jedoch → allerdings

2.1. Trotzdem :: nevertheless 🌧️

🧠 Word order

✅ The important rule:

trotzdem → conjugated verb remains in Position 2.

 Hauptsatz, trotzdem + P2(Verb) + Subjekt + ... \boxed { \text { Hauptsatz, trotzdem + P2(Verb) + Subjekt + ... }} Hauptsatz, trotzdem + P2(Verb) + Subjekt + ...

  • Es regnet. Trotzdem gehe ich spazieren.
  • Es regnet Bindfäden, trotzdem geht er joggen.

The verb stay at p2 & trotzdem can dance around in two useful positions:

1. Trotzdem p1, Subject at p3 (normal)

 Hauptsatz, P1(trotzdem) + Verb + P3(Subjekt) + ... \boxed { \text { Hauptsatz, P1(trotzdem) + Verb + P3(Subjekt) + ... }} Hauptsatz, P1(trotzdem) + Verb + P3(Subjekt) + ...

  • Er hat kein Geld, trotzdem kauft er ein neues Haus.

2. Subject p1, Trotzdem at p3

 Hauptsatz, P1(Subjekt) + Verb + P3(trotzdem) + ... \boxed { \text { Hauptsatz, P1(Subjekt) + Verb + P3(trotzdem) + ... }} Hauptsatz, P1(Subjekt) + Verb + P3(trotzdem) + ...

  • Er hat kein Geld, er kauft trotzdem ein neues Haus.
