X adj als B = A is bigger(adj) than B
Example:

|---|---|
| Das Auto ist schneller als das Fahrrad. | The car is faster than the bicycle. |
| Das Tablet ist praktischer als der Laptop. | The tablet is more practical than the laptop. |

🆚📐 Declined Comparative Before a Noun
All the examples above use the comparative after
sein(predicative — no ending).
When a comparative adjective stands before a noun, it takes the exact same endings as a normal adjective.
Just attach them to the comparative form (-er + the ending) instead of the basic form.
| Position | Example |
|---|---|
| Predicative (no ending) | Der Zug ist schneller. |
| Attributive, with article | Ich nehme den schnelleren Zug. |
| Attributive, no article | Schnellere Züge fahren auf dieser Strecke. |
- Sie kauft das billigere Auto. → She's buying the cheaper car.
- Ich wohne jetzt in einer größeren Wohnung. → I now live in a bigger apartment.
- Wir brauchen bessere Lösungen. → We need better solutions.
🧠 Treat schneller, billiger, besser... as the new "base" adjective and apply the normal der-/ein-/no-article
ending tables from Adjectives.
3. 📶 SUPERLATIV
Used when comparing three or more things or when something is at the top or bottom of a scale.
- the highest degree (fastest, biggest, warmest)
Rule 1: Predicate / Adverbial Superlative
In most cases article replaced by am (an + dem)
When the adjective is used without a noun, use:
| Positive | Superlative | English |
|---|---|---|
| schnell | am schnellsten | fastest |
| klein | am kleinsten | smallest |
| schön | am schönsten | most beautiful |
| alt | am ältesten | oldest |
More Example:
| Positive | conmparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| billig | billiger | am billigsten |
| groß | größer | am größten |
| teuer | teurer | am teuersten |
| schön | schöner | am schönsten |
| kurz | kürzer | am kürzesten |
🔊 When to Use -esten
if adjective end with t, d, s, ß, z, sch → add -esten instead of -sten
Used in the adjective stem ends in a sound that makes -sten difficult to pronounce
| Positive | Superlative |
|---|---|
| alt | am ältesten |
| breit | am breitesten |
| süß | am süßesten |
| heiß | am heißesten |
| kurz | am kürzesten |
| frisch | am frischesten |
🔤 Umlaut
If the root contains a, o, u → add an umlaut in the superlative form.
| Positive | Superlative | English |
|---|---|---|
| alt | am ältesten | oldest |
| groß | am größten | biggest |
| jung | am jüngsten | youngest |
| warm | am wärmsten | warmest |
| kurz | am kürzesten | shortest |
⚠️ Not every adjective with a, o, or u takes an umlaut.
Examples:
- froh → am frohesten ❌ not am fröhsten
- rot → am rötesten / am rotesten depending on usage
- laut → am lautesten
So the umlaut rule should be treated as a common pattern, not an absolute rule.
Rule 2: Superlative Before a Noun
When the superlative comes before a noun, use:
The ending changes according to gender, case, and number.
| Positive | Superlative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| schnell | der schnellste | der schnellste Läufer |
| klein | die kleinste | die kleinste Stadt |
| schön | das schönste | das schönste Haus |
| alt | die ältesten | die ältesten Gebäude |
Irregular Superlatives
| Positive | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| gut | besser | am besten |
| viel | mehr | am meisten |
| gern | lieber | am liebsten |
| hoch | höher | am höchsten |
Examples:
- Das Auto ist am schnellsten. --> The car is the fastest.
- Er ist der klügste Schüler. --> He is the smartest student.
- Ralphs ist am intelligentesten. --> Ralphs is the most intelligent.
- Er ist am schnellsten. --> He is the fastest.
