2. 📢 IMPERATIVE (Imperative)

used to order/ command/ request/ suggest/ advise.

Verb (1st position) + (Object / Info)

• The word “bitte” (please), to make it more polite can be used anywhere in the sentence.

⚙️ General Rules

• The subject (du / ihr / Sie / wir) is usually omitted, except for Sie (formal).
  • (du) Lerne Deutsch! —> Learn German!
  • (ihr) Lernt Deutsch! —> Learn German! (to several people)
  • (Sie) Lernen Sie Deutsch! —> Learn German! (formal)
  • (wir) Lernen wir Deutsch! —> Let’s learn German!

Used with 2nd person only:

1, “Sie” – Formal you

• You write the word Sie.
• The verb is conjugated in the Sie-form (like in normal sentences).
• Object is case changes according to verb

Example

• Gehen Sie durch Garten
• prechen Sie bitte langsamer! — Please speak more slowly.

2. “ihr” – You (plural, informal)

• You do NOT write the word ihr.
• The verb is conjugated in the ihr-form (ends with -t).

Example

• Geht durch den Garten! —> Go through the garden.
• Kommt her! — Come here!
• Wartet bitte! — Wait, please!

3. “du” – You (singular, informal)

• You do NOT write the word du.

• The verb is conjugated in the du-form, but:

• remove -st from the verb to make it accusative

  • You drop “-st” from the ending.
  • Sometimes you add -e (optional in many verbs).
  • For stem-changing verbs (like fahren → fährst), use the du-form stem without -st.

Example

• Geh (e) durch den Garten! — Go through the garden!
• Lern(e) Deutsch! — Learn German!
• Sprich langsamer! — Speak more slowly! (sprechen → sprichst → sprich)
• Iss das! — Eat that! (essen → isst → iss)
