Indirekte Fragesätze (Indirect Questions) ❔
An indirect question embeds a question inside another sentence — used to ask politely, report what someone asked, or say what you don't know.
Direct → Indirect
The embedded part is a subordinate clause: the conjugated verb moves to the end.
Same as every subordinate clause
- Add starter template
- The question word (or
ob) goes right after the comma - the conjugated verb jumps to the very end.
Formula
- W/H Question
Keep the W-word + verb at the end.
- Yes/No question
Replace the question with ob + verb at the end.
No question mark is needed when the indirect question is part of a statement(e.g., Ich weiß nicht, wo du wohnst.).
A question mark is used only if the entire sentence is a question (e.g., Kannst du mir sagen, wo du wohnst?).
