B1 Course Guide: Cases & Declension

PASSIV (Passive Voice) 🔄

Passive shifts focus from who does the action to the action / the affected thing itself. The agent (who did it) becomes unimportant or unknown.

🎯 Focus per level:

  • A2: Recognize PrĂ€sens Passiv (wird gemacht)
  • B1: PrĂ€sens & PrĂ€teritum Passiv, Passiv + Modalverben, von/durch, Zustandspassiv (recognize)
  • B2: Passiv in all tenses, Konjunktiv with Passiv, alternatives (sich lassen, sein...zu)

1. Active → Passive: The Core Rule

Akkusativ object (active) → Subject (passive, Nominativ) The conjugated verb becomes werden + Partizip II

AktivPassiv
SubjectDer Mechaniker repariert das Auto.Das Auto wird von dem Mechaniker repariert.
(Der Mechaniker = Subjekt, Akk. = das Auto)(das Auto = neues Subjekt)
  • Der Koch kocht die Suppe. → Die Suppe wird gekocht.
  • Die Firma stellt neue Mitarbeiter ein. → Neue Mitarbeiter werden eingestellt.

🧠 Note: Only verbs with an Akkusativ object can form a normal passive. Verbs without an object (or only with Dativ) usually can't — see §5 Impersonal Passive below.

2. Vorgangspassiv (Process Passive) — werden + Partizip II

The everyday passive — describes an action happening, not a finished state.

TenseFormulaExampleTranslation
PrÀsenswerden (conjugated) + Partizip IIDas Auto wird repariert. The car is being repaired.
PrÀteritumwurde (conjugated) + Partizip IIDas Auto wurde repariert. The car was repaired.
Perfektsein (conjugated) + Partizip II + wordenDas Auto ist repariert worden. The car has been repaired.
Plusquamperfektwar (conjugated) + Partizip II + wordenDas Auto war repariert worden. The car had been repaired.
Futur Iwerden (conjugated) + Partizip II + werdenDas Auto wird repariert werden. The car will be repaired.

⚠ Key trap: In Perfekt/Plusquamperfekt Passiv, the Partizip II of werden is worden — not geworden. ( geworden is only used when werden means "to become".)

werden Conjugation (PrĂ€sens / PrĂ€teritum) — quick reference

PrÀsensPrÀteritum
ichwerdewurde
duwirstwurdest
er/sie/eswirdwurde
wirwerdenwurden
ihrwerdetwurdet
sie/Siewerdenwurden

3. Passiv mit Modalverben (Passive with Modal Verbs)

Modal verb (conjugated) + ... + Partizip II + werden (infinitive, goes to the very end)

AktivPassiv
Man muss das Formular ausfĂŒllen.Das Formular muss ausgefĂŒllt werden.
Man kann die TĂŒr öffnen.Die TĂŒr kann geöffnet werden.
Man soll die Rechnung bezahlen.Die Rechnung soll bezahlt werden.
  • Die Aufgabe musste schnell gelöst werden. → The task had to be solved quickly. (PrĂ€teritum + Modal)
  • Das Problem muss sofort gelöst werden. → The problem must be solved immediately.

🧠 This pattern (muss/kann/soll ... + Partizip II + werden) is extremely common in telc B1 Sprachbausteine — instructions, rules, and notices are almost always written this way.

4. The Agent: von vs durch vs mit

PrepositionCaseUsed forExample
vonDativThe person/agent doing the actionDas Buch wird von der Autorin geschrieben.
durchAkkusativThe means/cause (impersonal, indirect)Die Stadt wurde durch das Erdbeben zerstört.
mitDativThe tool/instrumentDie TĂŒr wird mit einem SchlĂŒssel geöffnet.

🧠 Most of the time the agent is simply left out — passive is most natural when who did it is unknown or unimportant:

  • Das Fenster wurde geöffnet. (by whom? — doesn't matter)

5. Impersonal Passive (Subjektloses Passiv)

Used with verbs that have no Akkusativ object (intransitive verbs) — there is no real subject, so es fills the front position, or it's dropped if another element starts the sentence.

  • Es wird hier getanzt. → There's dancing going on here.
  • Es wird viel gelacht. → There's a lot of laughing.
  • Hier wird geraucht. (es disappears once another word — Hier — takes position 1)
  • Sonntags wird nicht gearbeitet. → People don't work on Sundays.

6. Zustandspassiv (sein + Partizip II) — State Passive

Describes the resulting state, not the action happening. Compare:

Vorgangspassiv (action happening)Zustandspassiv (resulting state)
Die TĂŒr wird geöffnet. (someone is opening it now)Die TĂŒr ist geöffnet. (it is now open)
Das Essen wird gekocht. (being cooked)Das Essen ist gekocht. (it's ready/cooked)

🧠 Rule of thumb: werden = process in progress → sein = finished result/state. Zustandspassiv looks like Perfekt but describes a current condition, not a completed past event.

7. Alternatives to Passive (common paraphrases)

telc reading & language-element tasks often test whether you recognize these as passive-equivalent.

ConstructionExampleMeaning
man + active verbMan repariert das Auto.(Someone repairs the car.) = Das Auto wird repariert.
sich lassen + InfinitivDas Problem lÀsst sich lösen. The problem can be solved. (= kann gelöst werden)
sein...zu + InfinitivDas Formular ist auszufĂŒllen. The form is to be filled out. (= muss ausgefĂŒllt werden)

📋 Practice Examples

  1. Der Brief wird morgen geschickt. → The letter is being sent tomorrow.
  2. Die Rechnung wurde gestern bezahlt. → The bill was paid yesterday.
  3. Das Haus ist schon verkauft worden. → The house has already been sold.
  4. Die Fenster mĂŒssen geputzt werden. → The windows must be cleaned.
  5. Es wird heute Abend gefeiert. → There's a celebration tonight.
  6. Die TĂŒr ist abgeschlossen. (Zustandspassiv — it's locked now)
