Funktionsverbgefüge (Noun-Verb Combinations) 🧷

A Funktionsverb ("function verb") combines with a noun to express what a single, simpler verb already means — the noun carries the real meaning, the verb is almost "empty." This nominal style is the formal/written register German prefers in news, official letters, and reports — exactly the register telc B1 reading texts use.

🎯 Focus per level:

  • B1: recognize the most common combinations in reading texts; use a handful actively in writing
  • B2: use them productively to sound more formal; convert between verb-style and noun-style freely

1. The Pattern

Funktionsverb (treffen, nehmen, geben, machen, stellen, leisten, üben, legen, ziehen...) + Nomen (+ Präposition)

Funktionsverbgefüge= Simple verbEnglish
eine Entscheidung treffenentscheidento decide
Rücksicht nehmen (auf + Akk.)berücksichtigento take into consideration
Einfluss nehmen (auf + Akk.)beeinflussento influence
Kritik üben (an + Dat.)kritisierento criticize
Stellung nehmen (zu + Dat.)sich äußernto comment on, take a position
Anspruch erheben (auf + Akk.)etwas fordernto claim/demand
Wert legen (auf + Akk.)etwas wichtig findento value, attach importance to
Verantwortung tragen/übernehmenverantwortlich seinto bear/take responsibility
zur Verfügung stehenverfügbar seinto be available
in Kraft tretengültig werdento take effect
Auskunft gebeninformierento give information
ein Versprechen geben/machenversprechento make a promise
einen Vorschlag machenvorschlagento make a suggestion
Acht geben (auf + Akk.)aufpassento pay attention to
Platz nehmensich setzento take a seat
Sorge tragen (für + Akk.)sich kümmern umto take care of
Anerkennung findenanerkannt werdento gain recognition
in Frage stellenzweifeln / hinterfragento call into question
Schluss machen (mit + Dat.)aufhören (mit)to end/stop (something)

🧠 Several of these keep their own fixed preposition (Rücksicht nehmen auf, Kritik üben an, Stellung nehmen zu, Wert legen auf) — same idea as Verben mit Präposition in 3-0-Preposition.md, just applied to the noun phrase instead of a bare verb.

2. Why German Uses This (Nominalstil vs. Verbalstil)

Verbalstil (verb style) is direct and conversational. Nominalstil (noun style) sounds more formal/official — it's how news articles, contracts, and business letters are written. Funktionsverbgefüge are the main tool for shifting from one to the other.

Verbalstil (spoken/direct)Nominalstil (formal/written)
Wir entscheiden morgen.Wir treffen morgen eine Entscheidung.
Bitte berücksichtigen Sie meine Situation.Bitte nehmen Sie Rücksicht auf meine Situation.
Das Gesetz gilt ab Januar.Das Gesetz tritt ab Januar in Kraft.

📋 Practice Examples

  1. Die Regierung hat eine Entscheidung getroffen. → The government has made a decision.
  2. Bitte nehmen Sie Rücksicht auf die anderen Gäste. → Please show consideration for the other guests.
  3. Der Chef möchte Stellung nehmen zu dem Vorfall. → The boss wants to comment on the incident.
  4. Das neue Gesetz tritt nächsten Monat in Kraft. → The new law takes effect next month.
  5. Wir legen großen Wert auf Pünktlichkeit. → We attach great importance to punctuality.
  6. Er übernimmt die Verantwortung für den Fehler. → He's taking responsibility for the mistake.
