Using Modal Verbs in a Sentence

Golden rule:

  • In a normal German sentence, the conjugated verb goes in the 2nd position (V2).

When using a modal verb:

  1. The modal verb is conjugated according to the subject.
  2. The modal verb goes in 2nd position (like a normal verb).
  3. The main verb moves to the end of the sentence in its infinitive (original) form.
  4. **The main verb is NOT conjugated.

Examples

  • Ich will schwimmen.

    • ich → subject
    • will → conjugated modal verb in 2nd position
    • schwimmen → main verb in infinitive at the end
  • Wir müssen heute arbeiten.

    • wir → subject
    • müssen → conjugated modal verb
    • arbeiten → main verb in infinitive at the end
  • Er darf nicht kommen.

    • er → subject
    • darf → conjugated modal verb
    • kommen → main verb in infinitive at the end
    • nicht → placed before the main verb to make the sentence negative

More Examples

- Er kann Deutsch sprechen - He can speak German
  - Du musst morgen kommen - You must come tomorrow
  - Sie will ihre Mutter anrufen - she wants to call her mother
  - Sie sollen ein Auto kaufen - They are supposed to buy a car
  - Ich möchte Tee trinken - I would like to drink tea

  - Wir müssen viel arbeiten - We must work a lot
  - Sie will Deutsch lernen - She wants to learn German
  - Ich muss um 11 Uhr schlafen - I must sleep at 11 PM
  - Sie können Fußball spielen - They can play football
  - Er will ein Auto kaufen - He wants to buy a car

Key Points

  • Only the modal verb is conjugated.
  • The main action verb always goes to the end in infinitive form.
  • This rule applies for all tenses with modal verbs (present, past, etc.).

Präteritum (simple past)

Verb Root + t + ending

  • Ich, er/es/sie = Root + te
  • du = Root + te + st (same as regular conjugation)
  • Ihr = Root + te + t (same as regular conjugation)
  • Wir, sis/Sie = Root + t+en (same as regular conjugation)

  • Er wollte Lehrer werden. → He wanted to become a teacher.
  • Ich mochte dieses Buch. → I liked this book.

Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II)

Verb Root + te + ending Add Umlaut to verb who already had a umlaut

2️⃣💖Seinwärewärestwärewärenwärtwärenwould be
3️⃣💭Werdenwürdewürdestwürdewürdenwürdetwürdenwould / would become
  • Ich hätte mehr Zeit, wenn ich nicht so viel arbeiten müsste. → I would have more time if I didn’t have to work so much.
  • Er wäre glücklich, wenn er ein neues Auto hätte. → He would be happy if he had a new car.
  • Wir würden gerne ins Kino gehen, aber wir haben keine Zeit. → We would like to go to the cinema, but we don’t have time.
  • Sie würde gerne reisen, aber sie hat Angst vor dem Fliegen. → She would like to travel, but she is afraid of flying.
  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich eine Weltreise machen. → If I were rich, I would go on a world tour.

Konjunktiv II for Other Verbs (general rule)

For almost all other verbs (weak and most strong verbs), don't conjugate a simple Konjunktiv II form — use * würde + Infinitiv* instead.

  • Ich würde mehr lernen, wenn ich Zeit hätte. → I would study more if I had time.
  • Er würde das Auto kaufen, wenn er genug Geld hätte. → He would buy the car if he had enough money.

⚠️ Common Irregular Short Forms (still used instead of würde + Infinitiv)

A handful of frequent strong verbs keep their own short Konjunktiv II form (Präteritum stem + Umlaut + ending) because it sounds more natural than würde + Infinitiv.

4️⃣🚗kommenkämekämestkämekämenkämetkämenwould come
5️⃣🏠bleibenbliebebliebestbliebebliebenbliebetbliebenwould stay
6️⃣📖lassenließeließestließeließenließetließenwould let/leave
  • Wenn ich das wüsste, würde ich es dir sagen. → If I knew that, I'd tell you.
  • Es gäbe kein Problem, wenn er pünktlich käme. → There would be no problem if he came on time.
  • An deiner Stelle bliebe ich heute zu Hause. → In your place, I would stay home today.

🧠 Rule of thumb: hätte, wäre, wüsste, gäbe, käme, ginge, bliebe + the modal verb forms above → use the short form. Every other verb → use würde + Infinitiv. Both patterns appear constantly in Wenn-Sätze ( conditional sentences), which telc B1 tests heavily in Sprachbausteine and Schreiben.
