Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II) 🎭

Konjunktiv 🎭
Konjunktiv is the German mood used to express things that are not direct facts. Unlike tenses (Präsens, Perfekt, Futur), which tell when something happens, Konjunktiv tells how the speaker views the statement.
What is a Mood?
A mood (Modus) expresses the speaker's attitude.

Konjunktiv II is the "what if / I would" mood. Use it for things that are not real (yet): polite requests, wishes, advice, and hypothetical situations.

🛠️ How to build it — 2 strategies
There are two ways to form Konjunktiv II. In speaking, strategy A covers ~90% of verbs.
A) würde + Infinitiv ✅ default for almost all verbs
Conjugate würde, send the main verb to the end as an infinitive.

B) "Real" Konjunktiv II forms ⚡ for the high-frequency verbs
For a small set of very common verbs, Germans avoid würde and use the one-word form instead. Learn these — they appear constantly:

👉 Golden rule: sein and haben → always use wäre / hätte. Modals → use their one-word form. Everything else → just use würde + Infinitiv.

🔗 Irreale Bedingungssätze (unreal "if" sentences)
Structure: Wenn + [condition in Konjunktiv II] , [result in Konjunktiv II]. The verb goes to the end of the wenn-clause (it's a Nebensatz).
Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dich besuchen.
→ If I had time, I would visit you.
Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich nicht mehr arbeiten.
→ If I were rich, I wouldn't work anymore.
Wenn das Wetter besser wäre, könnten wir grillen.
→ If the weather were better, we could barbecue.
💡 You can drop wenn and start with the verb: Hätte ich Zeit, würde ich kommen. (= Wenn ich Zeit hätte, …)

⏪ Konjunktiv II der Vergangenheit (the past form)
For regrets and "what could have been." Built with hätte / wäre + Partizip II. (Same haben/sein split as the Perfekt tense.)
Ich hätte das nicht sagen sollen. → I shouldn't have said that.
Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, … → If I had known that, …
Wir wären fast zu spät gekommen. → We had almost come too late.
Double infinitive with modals
When a modal verb is involved in the past, use hätte + Infinitiv + Modal-Infinitiv (both at the end).
Ich hätte früher kommen können. → I could have come earlier.
Du hättest fragen sollen. → You should have asked.
Das hätte passieren können. → That could have happened.
