Particles :: Partikeln

Particles are small words that add meaning, emphasis, attitude, or conversational nuance to a sentence.

They often do not change the basic grammatical structure.

Particles can be divided into 3 Categories

1. Modal Particles :: Modalpartikeln 💬

Modal particles express the speaker's attitude, expectation, emotion, or tone.

They are especially common in spoken German.

Komm her.

Come here.

Komm doch her.

Come here, will you? / Come on, come here.

The basic action is the same, but doch changes the speaker's tone.

2. Focus Particles :: Fokuspartikeln 🎯

Focus particles emphasize or limit a particular part of the sentence.

They can change what the listener should pay attention to and it can change meaning

Focus is on Peter.

Nur Peter hat die Prüfung bestanden.

• Only Peter passed the exam.

Focuses on die Prüfung.

Peter hat nur die Prüfung bestanden.

• Peter have Only passed the exam.

Common Focus Particles

auch	also / too	Ich komme auch mit.
sogar	even	Er hat sogar gewonnen.
erst	only / not until	Ich komme erst morgen.
schon	already / as early as	Ich bin schon fertig.
besonders	especially	Das ist besonders wichtig.

3. Answer Particles :: Antwortpartikeln 💡

Answer particles are used to answer questions or statements.

The most important ones are: ja, nein, doch

ja

Used for a positive answer.

Kommst du morgen? --> Ja.

Are you coming tomorrow? --> Yes.

nein

Used for a negative answer.

Kommst du morgen? --> Nein.

Are you coming tomorrow? --> No.

doch

doch contradicts a negative statement/question.

Du kommst nicht. --> Doch!

You're not coming. --> Yes, I am!
